The Eagles were 5-6 when they met the Dolphins for a Week 13 standoff on Sunday.
Even with no Nick Foles around to step in and play savior to Carson Wentz’s struggles connecting with a depleted receiving line, there was still hope. The rest of the NFC East was such a mess that with a win, the Birds could tie Dallas at the top of the division and hold onto their playoff chances.
It didn’t happen.
Despite Miami’s 2-9 losing record coming in, journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald — who’d faced off against the Eagles with seven different teams over the years — pulled out the stops and launched the Dolphins to a 37-31 victory.
Among Philadelphia fans, there was plenty of blame to spread around. The late collapse, which came after Philly held a 14-point lead in the third quarter, even spawned a new hashtag: #CryEaglesCry.
