Newel David Ward, devoted husband, dedicated father, supportive grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah, July 6, 2019.
He was born to George David Ward and Laura Amelia Rolfing August 25, 1924. After graduating from Declo High School, he worked in the heating plant at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. In Salt Lake he met Celia Jane Thayne, the love of his life. They were married February 4, 1943 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Newel served in the United States Army in the 367th Ordinance Maintenance Division during WWII.
After the war, Newel worked at St. Regis Paper Company as a salesman for 47 years, and as a part-time electrician. He loved gardening, and beautified the family home with an assortment of flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees. He was also a skillful craftsman, builder, and mechanic.
Newel was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the church as bishop, high councilor, and as a member of the stake presidency—among other callings.
Newel is survived by two sisters: LeRuth (Elmer) Tyau, Honolulu, HI; Elaine (Craig) Mayfield; one daughter and two sons: Dianne Peck, Sandy UT; David L. (JannaLee) Ward, Rexburg, ID; Clark N. (Stephanie) Ward, Herriman, UT. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.
Newel was preceded in death by his wife, Celia; two brothers and two sisters: Orvil (Mildred) Ward, Lorraine George Ward, Irene (Fawn) Anderson, Arlene (Earl) Noble. Also by two daughters and a grandson: Connie (Glenn) Kesler, Margie (Terry) Carlston, and Tyler Carlston.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 19, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral. Interment, Redwood Memorial Estates.
